Marquise cut diamonds are modified brilliant cut diamonds which are shaped like a football. As with the majority of fancy shapes, the ultimate shape of the finished diamond is determined by the rough crystal and the parameters it permits.
The marquise is typically cut as a variation of the 58 facet standard brilliant (33 crown, 25 pavilion), which is exactly like the round brilliant, the difference being that the pavilion may be cut with either 4, 6 or 8 pavilion main facets. The crown cut is occasionally modified in the marquise to create what is known as a “French Tip” and the bezel facet at the point of the diamond is eliminated.
The affect of this cut is that it makes the stone will look much larger than its actual carat weight. This brilliant-cut diamond looks stunning set with round or pear-shaped side stones.
The length-to-width ratio will determine the diamond’s outline, or how the diamond will appear when viewed from the top. For traditional marquise cut diamonds the length-to-width ratios should be between 1.75 and 2.25 and table and depth percentages should be between 53% – 60% and 50% – 65% respectively.
