Oval Cut diamondOval cut diamonds have a technical name which is “oval modified brilliant” due to its shape and the modifications of the traditional round brilliant configuration. The prices for ovals are relatively high due to their high demand.

The oval diamond has a stunning brilliance which is mainly due to the fact that its facets are very similar to those of a round diamond, and round diamonds have an exceptional sparkle. The length of this diamond makes it resemble long, slender fingers.

The oval diamond is usually cut into a standard 58 facet brilliant pattern, nevertheless it can have a varying number of pavilion main facets ranging from 4, 6 or 8. In the oval brilliant, much like other elongated fancy shapes, there is an increased chance of causing a “bow tie.” The bow tie is a dark area in the shape of a man’s bow tie that occurs when the angles of the cut are not optimum. Unfortunately the facet misalignment can detract from the brilliance, specifically if it has an exaggerated or overly dark bow tie effect and for this reason very high quality diamonds must be used for an oval cut diamond.

Oval diamonds have become very popular for center diamonds in engagement rings and for three stone oval rings which have become extremely popular for anniversary gifts.

For a stunning oval diamond the length to width ratio should be between 1.4 and 1.6 and the table should measure between 53% – 62% and depth between 60% – 70%.
