Princess cut diamonds are a modern classic. This diamond cut with its clean square lines gives a magnificent sparkle. This cut is sometimes referred to as a ‘square modified brilliant’. This shape is perfect if you are looking for a square or rectangular shape together with the brilliance of the round cut diamond.
The princess cut diamond was developed in the 1960s and has quickly grown in popularity and is now second in popularity to the round brilliant cut.
This cut uses both the step-cutting of the emerald cut together with the triangular facets found in the brilliant cut. The princess cut diamond is cut with right-angle corners. A princess cut diamond with the same width as the diameter of a round brilliant will weigh more than the round brilliant cut. The reason being is that it has corners that are removed for a round brilliant.
Despite the fact that most people prefer a square outline, some princess cut diamonds are cut with a somewhat more rectangle-shaped outline. The princess cut looks magnificent when used as a solitaire however it also looks excellent when it is combined with side stones, specifically trillions of smaller sized princess cut diamonds. The setting must give ample protection to the more vulnerable corners of the diamond and a V-shaped prong should be used on each point.
