If you were to look at a loose diamond when it had just been dug up from the mine you would find that it is semi transparent, coarse and dull. The diamond will only gain its sparkle when it is polished, and its value will then increase by approximately 50%. The quality of a diamond is decided according to its transparency, color, cut and weight. The final diamond cut is categorized on a scale from poor to fair to excellent. The majority of diamonds range somewhere in the middle of this scale.
